captain pedro and the 3 wishes (1996, dir: Claudio Nye, 50m, UK/Ger)
Captain Pedro and his family risk their lives at sea to escape the poverty of Cuba. This film follows the harrowing journey to reach the land where wishes come true...or do they?
the asylum (2001, dir: Elio Espana; pr: Jane McGee, 40m, UK)
Depicts life in Britain for those caught up in the immigration system. In highlighting the experience of two families applying for asylum, the film explores the challenges faced by both those accepted as refugees and those who have been decried as bogus
7.45pm interval (15min)
chatila (2001, dir: Diana Allen, 44m, US)
Explores life in Chatila, a Palestinian refugee camp in the suburbs of Beirut, through the eyes of a group of children living there. The film focuses on the politicization of children and the impact that TV coverage of the current intifada is having on their lives and that of their families. "Chatila" considers the role of martyrdom in contemporary Palestinian culture, as well as the ways in which the memories of the first generation of refugees from 1948 are transmitted to second and third generation Palestinians living in Lebanon. This is particularly interesting in that is gives a sense of how a cultural heritage is being preserved in exile for a generation who have never seen Palestine.

6.00pm speakers
sue buckle committee to defend asylum seekers
carlos carrillo chilean refugee
peter riaak sudanese refugee

Although based on the history of Cambodia during the years of the Khmer Rouge Regime (Angka), the film takes place in an unspecified country at an unspecified time where there is civil war and people are imprisoned and tortured for 'being'
7.40pm interval (15min)
barbed wire beat (2001, dir: Anne-Marie Sweeney, 14m, UK)
Moving and dynamic journey through the years of campaigning against immigration detention at Campsfield Detention Centre in Oxfordshire, showing the beat of resistance against Barbed Wired Europe
woomera 2002 (2002, 40m, Australia)
