34. Have you heard about this virus?
Please don't forward any message about viruses to your list. Most warning
messages about viruses are hoaxes and can cause a lot of confusion.
Examples of hoax viruses include: "Pen Pals", "Good Times", "Trojan", "Join
the Crew", "Red Alert", etc.
If we want to warn people about a virus we will email all the listowners
and ask them to send out a warning notice to their lists.
35. Can I get a virus from an email message?
You CANNOT get a virus from a plain text email message.
But if the message has an attachment such as a word-processed document, or
a spreadsheet, this may contain a virus which could damage other documents,
spreadsheets etc. JISCmail has a virus scanning 'front-end' which will
detect and 'quarantine' all known viruses. In general the JISCmail service
will check all incoming email for viruses and your computer centre
postmaster will be contacted if one is found in an email that you have
sent. We wish to help you, and by making both you and your organisation
aware that we have detected a virus, appropriate action can be taken to
prevent further contamination.
