CITIES AND REGIONS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Conference organised by the Centre for Urban and
Regional Development Studies (CURDS) University of Newcastle

Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne

17th-18th September 2002

The conference will seek to address the following issues:

 * The way in which cities and regions shape - and are shaped by -
the activities and experiences of their citizens.
 * Territorial differentiation of life chances and access to
services within, and between, cities and regions.
 * The application of theories of clusters, innovation systems and
knowledge-based development to the understanding of regional dynamics
and their translation into policy.
 * The revived interest in cities as motors of their regional
economies.
 * The role of ICTs in processes of urban and regional change
- the reality after the hype. The weaving of new technologies into
everyday patterns of work and leisure.
 * The impact of sub-national governance on patterns of
economic performance. Does devolution produce regional convergence or
divergence? In which fields do decentralised institutions have a
positive economic impact?

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL ON TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE INTERESTED.
