The SMR Officer will play a key role in the collation and dissemination of
archaeological information in the County. Working to the Principal
Archaeologist (SMR) the successful candidate will be responsible for the
daily operation of the SMR, dealing with telephone, email and written
queries, assisting visitors with their searches and helping members of the
public, developers and archaeological contractors alike. The SMR is
computerised, and the officer will be responsible for the upkeep of the
relevant systems.
In addition to SMR duties, there will be opportunities for experience in
other aspects of the work of the County Archaeology Office, including
Outreach & Education and Development Control and to contribute to the
overall work of the Heritage Team.
Requirements: Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology
or related degree, understanding and experience of British archaeology,
knowledge of current methodologies, prospection and investigation
techniques in British Archaeology, knowledge of current legislation and
guidance as it applies to archaeological resource management in the UK,
advanced IT skills (databases and Geographical Information Systems are
especially important), knowledge of the role and function of an SMR: its
place within the curatorial framework and its strengths, weaknesses and
limitations.
