Attached is a CFP for the annual Focus Graduate Student Conference at the
University of Cincinnati, to be held on October 25th and 26th, 2002. Please

Wendepunkte
The German Graduate Student Governance Association of the University of
Cincinnati and the editors of the graduate literary journal Focus on German
Studies invite abstracts for the Seventh Annual Focus Graduate Student
Conference held on October 25th and 26th, 2002.
We welcome presentations exploring Wendepunkte, moments of transition in
German Studies: How have historical and cultural turning points shaped the
literary and cultural tradition or paved the way for the re-evaluation and the
forging of new discourses? What do we learn about the way society responds
to moments of transition?
Possible turning points to be considered might include, but are not limited to:
decline of Ritterkultur - printing press - Reformation - Thirty Years War - Wars
of Independence - revolts and revolutions - World Wars - formation of new
political entities - Wende of 1989 - new religion and philosophies -
psychoanalysis - scientific inventions and discoveries - Industrial Revolution -
nationalism - globalism - waves of migration - the evolving of new genres -
invention of new media - feminism - innovations in popular culture -
catastrophe - formation and dissolution of social
movements/groups/minorities - diseases - changes in language
Abstracts should be submitted by August 20th, 2002. Please include a
summer address.
Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in
Focus on German Studies 10 (2003).
