Dear Colleagues,
Recently we have seen another virus hoax which has caused agitation and
annoyance to many colleagues and associated friends. Maybe Summer
is a good time to take two very simple precautions against the indiscriminate
spread of these pests. Ironically anti-virus software is powerless against
hoax messages which contain no virus!
May I make two suggestions which will limit harm in the future if you DO
receive a virus, or even if you succumb to a more sophisticated hoax in
future? (I'm not too proud to say that I have been taken in in the past!)
SUGGESTION ONE: GO THROUGH YOUR ADDRESS BOOK AND
REMOVE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ESSENTIAL.
SUGGESTION TWO: TURN OFF THE COMMAND "AUTOMATICALLY
PUT PEOPLE I REPLY TO IN MY ADDRESS BOOK".
If you don't know what I'm referring to, the chances are you have not got
this command turned on. But check anyway. Outlook Express 97 has:
Outlook Express - Tools - Options - Send - and the command is on the
Send "tab". If there is a tick next to this command, click on it to remove it.
You may like to send these suggestions on to friends and colleagues -
they could save people getting unnecessarily "infected" in the future merely
because they replied once to a query on an email list years ago.
Have a nice summer - when it starts (Lancaster is not showing any signs
of this at the moment..)

Subject: Apologies
With apologies to all, I've since been told that, as suspected, the so called alert was some
pathetic prankster's idea of a joke. However, I hope you'll all understand that having had
experience of needing to totally rebuild my system, I did not wish to see others go through
the same problems.
I've also since learned, you'll be glad to know, where to find a list of current hoaxes, and my
colleague may even be able to help get my machine to not chew up and spit out
Norton/McAfee prior to dying painfully.
Apologies again, and I hope you're all set up for a glorious summer (or those on the other
side of the globe, a cozy winter).
Regards and best wishes
[A Colleague]
