Dear colleagues,
This is probably rather a long shot, but I am writing to ask if anyone has
any experience of sending hearing-impaired students to German-speaking
countries for a year abroad. We have such a student who is now in her first
year (so there's plenty of time). Her impairment is severe, such that
people talking to her need to wear a microphone to communicate directly
with her hearing aids, but she copes very well with studying both German
and French and with switching between languages. She would like to be able
to participate in the year abroad, but has very reasonable worries about
feeling isolated, so she would like to go into a deaf-friendly environment
if possible - perhaps a deaf school or institution, a charity or similar.
Does anyone have any useful contacts? We'd be very grateful if you could
pass them on.
Thanks,
Sheila Watts
