Dear WG Members,
The Registry (http://wip.dublincore.org:8080/dcregistry/index.html) was
updated today with what I believe is a good solution to the issue Shigeo
raised regarding the need to indicate the status (and other information) of
our translations. This solution uses a data model created by Roland
Schwaenzl and myself that will enable us to capture, and report, information
about translations at the predicate level. For example, the 'label',
'definition' and 'comment' elements for a DC term may be translated by
different people or organizations, or on different dates. This model will
allow us to track and report this information at this level of granularity.
It will also, of course, allow us to indicate the status of each
translation.
To simplify the review process I have implemented some sample data for the
German, Japanese and Russian translations of the 'title' and creator'
elements. Note that the data itself is fictitious (I used the
names/organizations of people instrumental in the translations and data
modeling) but is fine for demonstrating this functionality. Only the
'title' and 'creator' terms were changed, and only for the previously
mentioned languages. To review the changes do the following:
- select either German, Japanese or Russian from the preferences menu for
both the user interface and results options
- select the search option and click on the
'http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/' link
- click on either 'title or 'creator'
- the following will be displayed (German view):
http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/creator
Bezeichung Verfasser oder Urheber (zusätzliche informationen)
Definition Die Person(en) oder Organisation(en)... (zusätzliche
informationen)
Definiert http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/
RDF-Typ Property
- note that the label (Bezeichung) and definition tags have hyperlinks
labeled 'zusätzliche informationen'(additional information). Clicking on
this link (the one attached to 'label') will produce the following
information about this translation:
file:///dublincore.org/translation/info/dces_deDE#creator_label
Beschreibung Zuordnung eines deutschen Labels zu einem DC Term
RDF-Typ Statement
Schöpfer Roland Schwäenzl
Verleger Universität Osnabrück (http://www.uni-osnabrueck.de/)
RechtcManagement Die publizierende Organisation uebernimmt ...
This is meant to demonstrate the functionality and is not meant to
incorporate all of the data that we would want tt report for translations
(i.e., there is not mention of status). Additional items, such as date,
status, etc. can be easily added.
Please review this change as soon as possible and let me know your comments,
suggesitons, etc. If this solution proves acceptable then we should define
the data and wording (English version) that we want displayed so that we can
get the translations done. We are slightly ahead of schedule, but do not
have a lot of time left so promptness is appreciated. Thanks.
Best Regards,
Harry Wagner

Subject: Translation Requirement
Dear WG Members,
I think Shigeo raised a valid point recently when he mentioned the need to
clarify our translations requirement. One of the requirements of the Phase
1 registry is that it be multilingual, both the user interface and the term
definitions. However, only the English translation of the terms has been
approved. None of the other translations are endorsed by the DCMI.
It is important that we somehow indicate the status of translations when
they are displayed, in order to remove any potential ambiguity. It is
equally important that we understand the requirement before we try to
identify a solution. Certainly we will want to display the status of the
translation. We may, at some point, also wish to display the name of the
translator, the date the translation was done, etc.
The following is displayed when a user clicks on 'title' (for the sake of
discussion let's assume that this is displayed as a non-approved
translation):
http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/title
Label Title
Definition A name given to the resource.
Description Typically, a Title will be a name by which...
Is Defined By http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/
RDF Type Property
Issued 1999-07-02
superProperty Of alternative
superProperty Of label
I would like to solicit input from the WGs as to what additional
information, regarding the translation, we feel it is important to display.
For example, possibly something like?:
Comment This translation... The publisher disclaims any
responsibility...
I think if we approach the problem from this perspective we can find a
solution that can be accommodated in the short timeframe we have left.
Best Regards,
Harry
