Hi,

The Gathering the Jewels project has just published (draft) imaging
guidelines which deal with the issues you raise, ie image
parameters.  The address is:
http://www.gtj.org.uk/contractors.html#guide.

(We call a web display image an "import master", because we
import them into our CMS which creates the display files
automatically. The import master represents the maximum
resolution web display file).

You will notice that we have different parameters for each type of
material we digitise. If the tables look too confusing, we have
found the folowing principles really useful:

1. Resolution (pixel dimensions) is all about detail. If you want to
show lots of detail you need more pixels;
2. Continuous tone images (photographs, paintings etc) compress
better in JPEG format;
3. Line art, flat colour and high contrast text scans compress
better in GIF or PNG format.

I hope this helps.

Leith
