University of Hull and UKOLN receive JISC funding to explore institutionalportals...
Academic Services Interactive Media at the University of Hull, working in
partnership with UKOLN, has been successful in bidding to the Joint
Information Systems Committee's (JISC) recent call for proposals under their
FAIR Programme. The project, Presenting natiOnal Resources To Audiences
Locally (PORTAL), will run over 18 months, and is funded to explore issues
around the deployment and use of portals within universities. It has the
potential to play an important role in shaping the JISC's thinking on
portals and their growing place in both the national and institutional
information landscapes.
As well as demonstrating the surfacing of institutional content, a key
aspect of PORTAL is the integration of external resources such as those
provided within the JISC's Information Environment. The project will be
working closely with the Resource Discovery Network (RDN) and will also seek
to build relationships with other JISC services and external content
providers.
The PORTAL project is aligned to ongoing work at Hull, and forms part of the
programme to deliver the Digital University. This funding allows Academic
Services Interactive Media to supplement the technical team already at work
on Hull's institutional portal. Further, it enables us to commission and
benefit from research into the ways in which students and staff actually
make use of portals and related information resources.
The project is due to commence on 1 August, and will be Project Managed by
Paul Miller of UKOLN (located within Academic Services Interactive Media). A
number of existing Interactive Media staff will be closely involved with the
project, and new staff will also be recruited shortly.
Ian Dolphin, Head of Academic Services Interactive Media, will be presenting
a paper on this project and Hull's existing portal development work at the
Nottingham Portals conference on 1 July.
If you have any queries or comments, please do not hesitate to get in touch,
Paul
