italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

We would be grateful if colleagues could bring the following details
to the attention of any suitable students.

Loredana Polezzi
Department of Italian
University of Warwick

                        Warwick Postgraduate Research Fellow

Applications are invited for a Postgraduate Research Fellow in the
Department of Italian with effect from 1 October 2002. The award is open
to students with an excellent knowledge of English and Italian who wish
to study for a doctoral degree while at the same time undertaking about 5
hours undergraduate teaching a week. The award offers:

The payment of your academic fees at the Home/EU rate
A combined salary and maintenance grant of £9.500.
The opportunity to gain valuable work experience with the
    Department
The status of an employee of the University of Warwick.

You are expected to obtain at least an upper second class honours
degree (or equivalent) in Italian Studies or in a joint degree that includes
Italian. Candidates will be expected to show evidence of their ability to
carry out independent research. The person appointed will have access
to the University research and teaching training programme for
graduates and academic staff. In addition the proposed area of research
must be in a field in which the Department has the necessary expertise to
supervise you (see below).

Those considering applying are welcome to contact Professor Ann
Caesar, Director of Granduate Studies, Department of Italian ( email:
{ HYPERLINK mailto:[log in to unmask] [log in to unmask] tel: +44 (0) 24 7652 4126) or Charlotte Ross,
Graduate Teaching Assistant (email: [log in to unmask] tel. +44 (0)
24 7652 8490) for an informal discussion.

Applications should include a full curriculum vitae and a statement of
the proposed area of research of no more than 700 words. You should
also contact two referees to arrange for them to send references directly
to Mrs Josie Williams, Department of Italian, University of Warwick,
Coventry CV4 7AL (email: { HYPERLINK mailto:[log in to unmask]) [log in to unmask]).

Closing date for applications is 21st June 2002.
We shall, where possible, seek to interview late June, early July.

The teaching staff of the Department of Italian comprises 1 Professor, 3
Lecturers and 4 Postgraduate Tutors (2 Language Tutors, 1 Graduate
Teaching Assistant and 1 Warwick Postgraduate Research Fellow). We
admit about 30 undergraduates a year who take Italian in combination
with one of the following: European Literature, French, German, English,
Film Studies, Theatre Studies and International Studies. At graduate
level members of the Department are currently involved in the
supervision of 8 PhD students. A major new initiative, a joint
Birmingham-Warwick taught MA in Italian Studies: Culture and
Communication began in October 2001 and recently won a three-year
award to develop on-line teaching materials. In conjunction with the
Department of Italian Studies at Birmingham we run a highly successful
cycle of talks and symposia. Most recently two members of the
Department organised an international conference 'Borderlines' on
migration and writing, and a conference on Literature and Science is
being organised for next year.

Research interest within the Department extend from Dante to
cyberfiction with particular strenghts concentrated in the Middle Ages
and the Renaissance and in the 19th and 20th centuries. Research
interests of individual members of staff are listed below:

Jenny Burns (MA, MSt, DPhil) Post-war narrative fiction, political and
ethical issues in literature, immigrant writing, cinema.

Simon Gilson (BA, PhD) Dante, relations between literature and science,
state of the arts in the Renaissance.

Ann Hallamore Caesar (MA, PhD) the rise of the modern novel, 19th and
20th century narrative, Pirandello, literary modernism, women writers and
readers.

Loredana Polezzi (Dott.Ling Lett., MA, PhD) history of travel writing,
translation studies, Italian as a foreign language.

The Department was awarded a 5 in the 2001 RAE .

The Faculty of Arts of which the Department of Italian is a member has a
large postgraduate community which includes about 180 PhD students
and several Warwick Postgraduate Research Fellows who form an
important link between the academic staff and the graduate community.
The successful candidate will find that although his or her home is in the
Department, there are many opportunities to meet with other staff and
students through a range of activities including workshops, day schools,
reading groups and conferences supported both by subject departments
and the interdisciplinary research centres which exist both within the
Faculty, such as the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance, or the
Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies and outside,
such as the Centre for Research in Philosophy and Literature and the
Centre for Gender Studies. The University Library which holds over
90.000 volumes and about 5.500 periodical and statistical series supports
our postgraduate students through our specialist subject librarian. One
of the University's greatest assets is the Arts Centre, the largest outside
London, with a cinema, two theatres, art gallery and concert hall,
restaurant and bookshop.
