italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear all,
I have two queries relating to my research on the cinquecento villotta
in northern Italy.
First, I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend someone to help me
translate the texts of Alvise Castellino _Il primo libro de villotte_ of
1541. I'm fairly sure they're in a Veneto or Venetian dialect, and I'm
trying to translate them into English. There are 29 texts, four of which
I do not understand at all. I have a partial understanding of the
remainder. If anyone is interested, please contact me privately. (By the
way, at least some of the texts are quite bawdy.)
Second, I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what, if any, significance
mazorana (maggiorana, marjoram) might have had in the cinquecento. It
appears in the following text from _Il primo libro de villotte alla
padoana_ of 1557. (I've retained the spelling and the little punctuation
from my source.)
Da ’l horto se ne vien la villanella
do la villanella co’l cestoletto
pien de mazorana
O che gentil fasana
Fatta di ros’e fior adorn’et bella
Hor vella, hor vella
Ella non e quella
E so ben de si
E so ben de no
E do turela su
E do turela mo
Turela mo vilano
Le putta dal cestello
La ti fara stentare
Si ti dara martello
E do guarde in colla
E do co’la si tien
Da me la pur che la mi vien
I know that "Torela mo villano" dates from the quattrocento; I think
that the first part may also be from an older song but I have to confess
that I haven't delved into this aspect yet.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Best wishes,
Melanie
