Hi Crispin,
David Baker's report makes interesting reading, so its worth pursuing
it. For those that don't have time to read it:
- the report is based on a rapid survey of IHBC members, there were 73
replies giving a sample of 21% of all local planning authorities
- 50-60% were found to have no specialist supporting systems. About 25%
were found to have a database and 25% had GIS - its not clear if these
were in the same authorities. 25% had paper based information systems of
some type.
The report suggested that links between county based SMRs & conservation
officers in district authorities were poor in many areas. Also that
information plays a very different role in buildings conservation - with
the emphasis being placed on individual casework and on good design &
re-use of buildings rather than the wider historical context.
Any comments anyone? Do you know the buildings conservation teams
working in your areas. What sort of systems are they using?
with interest,
Kate
