As a contractor I worked on a sewer pipeline running adjacent to the Antonine Wall. As part of this we assisted in the re-direction of some water pipes through trenchless technology.
In this case we monitored the excavation of the entrance, angle turn and exit holes as the archaeological mitigation. Admittedly there was not much expected archaeology, the bore of the mole was narrow and the pits exposed nothing of interest. Hence the potential adverse impact from the running of the mole was assessed as minor and much less than machine evaluating the line of the mole (and hence negating the use of the mole).
At the time I was told ?prophetic? tales of i. a mole breaking down and having to be dug out and ii. a mole going off-course and surfacing unexpectedly.
