CALL FOR PAPERS
Clowns, Fools and Picaros
Popular Forms in Literature, Drama and Film
The School of Languages, Literatures and Arts at The Queen's University of
Belfast is organising an international conference on clowns to be held from 11-
13 September 2003. The conference will be multidisciplinary in scope and
aims to bring together academics, theorists and practitioners. It is
anticipated that proceedings will be published.
From Simplicissimus and Don Quixote through to Oskar Matzerath, from
commedia dell'arte, Shakespeare and Molière through to Brecht and Beckett,
from Chaplin and Valentin through to Fellini - clowns and rogue figures have
featured consistently throughout the history of literature, theatre and film. The
conference invites exploration of the following themes:
- the various masks of the clown
- the clown as the eternal outsider: an artistic expression of the brittle
relationship between the individual and society.
- the clown's potential for dialogicity; significance of the split personality or
dualistic pairings
- theories of the clownesque: e.g. how widely applicable is Mikhail Bakhtin's
interpretation of laughter and the grotesque body in the history of clowning?
- other grotesque forms such as puppets
- who are the clowns and what constitutes the clownesque in our digitalised
computer age?
Practical performance projects also welcome.
