Brush up Your Language Skills
Parlez-vous français? Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Or not so much these days?
The Open University's residential language courses offer you the chance
to bring your French or German back up to speed. Action in French and
Kapriolen: Action in German are both one week residential schools, ideal
for teachers wishing to brush up their post-GCSE French and/or German
for use in the classroom.
Each course costs £380, which includes the price of accommodation,
meals, study programme and all study materials. It excludes the cost of
travel to and from the school.
Before each of the residential weeks, there is some preparatory work to
assess skills and knowledge of the language and to find out how we can
best help you to improve. There is a dedicated telephone help line for
your academic queries during this period.
Action in French
Action in French, based at Caen University, will help you to develop the
basic or rusty French that you already have by :
* Consolidating and improving your pronunciation and intonation of
spoken French by working with native speakers
* Developing your ability to put your point of view and justify
and compare your choices both orally and in writing
* Enabling you to define your future learning needs and ways of
meeting them
Kapriolen: Action in German,
You can attend this course either at the University of Jena (Germany) or
UMIST in Manchester, (UK) . The course will enable you to build on your
existing skills (both linguistic and cultural) and help you to:
* Use German in a variety of contexts - classroom, computing,
formal and informal
* Consolidate and improve your pronunciation and intonation of
spoken German by working with native speakers
* Write confidently in German, improving your proficiency in
German grammar
Assessment for both schools is by means of two assessed tasks, an oral
recorded during the residential week and a piece of written work to be
completed after you return. Both pieces must be completed successfully
to pass the course. On successful completion, you will be awarded 10
CATS points.
