Dear WG Members,
Here is a list of known tasks / functions that are left to complete for the
phase 1 registry:

- write help screens
- modify search algorithm to support international character sets
- translate UI into all supported languages
- general code cleanup to better isolate functionality, trap and report
exceptions, etc.

I realize that we are somewhat dependent upon an approved version of the
schemas.  However, I think we should implement with the version of the
schemas that we have now, rather then delay.

If you have not already reviewed the work-to-date
(http://wip.dublincore.org:8080/registry/home) I encourage you to do so.  If
there is functionality that you feel should be included in phase 1 and is
not already there, or included in the list above please let me know.  The
deadline for identifying functional requirements is April 30th.

I am hesitant to look too far ahead for fear of losing our phase 1 momentum,
but would like to mention the following:

Phase 2 will address the application interface (registry/application to
registry API).  I expect to have a phase 2 prototype available within the
next month or so that exposes some of the phase 1 functionality as a Web
service.  Web services appear to be an excellent solution for this type of
API.  I am anxious to see what 'services' the WG group feels should be
offered.

I attended the JAXR session at Java One last month.  JAXR
(http://java.sun.com/xml/jaxr/) is the Java API for XML registries.   It
provides a standard API for applications to interact with registries,
regardless of their type (UDDI, ebXML, other...).  It is geared toward the
business community, but may be able to be adapted to serve the research
community as well.  Farrukh Najmi is a Sun Staff Engineer and the
specification lead for JAXR (JSR-093).  I had an opportunity to speak with
Farrukh about our registry work and what we are trying to accomplish.  It
was exciting for me to learn that he was aware of the  work we are doing,
and also thought this technology could be adapted for metadata (vs.
business) registries.  I will, of course, pursue this further
