NOTICE OF MEETING
The 8th Ordinary Meeting of the Society and will be held on Monday 29 April
2002 at 7pm in the HAWORTH BUILDING, the University of Birmingham B15 2TT.
Subject: "Assessment and management of contaminated land
- developing science or black art?"
Speaker: Hugh Mallett, Enviros Aspinwall
Synopsis: The lecture will be split into the following main areas of
discussion;
1. Good practice investigations
2. Accreditation of Specialists
3. The management of "waste"
4. Baseline SI for IPPC
5. The assessment of risk
6. Risk communication
Hugh Mallett is a Project Director and engineering geologist with Enviros
Aspinwall with a wide variety of professional experience gained over more
than 25 years. He chaired the Contaminated Land group of the AGS for 3 years
and has recently been elected as Chairman Elect of the AGS. Hugh also
represents the AGS on the Professional & Technical Panel involved in the
registration of Specialists in Land Condition.
At Aspinwall for the last 12 years, Hugh leads a multi-disciplinary team
involved in the project management, investigation and assessment of
contaminated land, prior to acquisition, reclamation or redevelopment.
Before joining Aspinwall Hugh spent the first ten years of his career
involved in geological and geotechnical interpretation and advice on many
civil engineering and construction projects in the UK and overseas.
Subsequently he worked as a geologist in the Minerals Planning Division of
the Department of Environment.
Members and visitors should aim to arrive between 6 p.m. and 6.15 p.m. and
park their cars in a perimeter car park. Normal refreshments (bread, pate,
cheese and coffee) will be available in the main bar of Staff House before
the meeting. At about 6.45 p.m. members should walk across to the Haworth
Chemistry Building.
