I've been thinking a lot recently about what we mean when we say volunteer projects for the UK Archaeology Opportunities website to advertise.
The answer is almost anything, so long as it is linked with UK and/or Irish Archaeology. We take adverts for museum volunteers, people washing finds (you'd be amazed but there are actually people out there dying to give up a few hours per week to do it, so long as its near home!), survey work, SMR work, etc.
So if you've been put off putting an advert on the website because your project doesn't involve excavation work, reconsider. I mean, how many people who can't dig (for whatever reasons) want to be involved in archaeology somehow? Perhaps there are even archaeology students out there that want to have experience of doing other things than just digging? Perhaps there are people out there who can't afford huge amounts of time off at once to go digging or can't afford to pay for a training dig who would be interested in your project.
Enough rambling I think! Visit http://www.ukarchaeology.org.uk if you're interested. The form for submitting projects can be reached through a link on the left hand frame of the page (may involve scrolling).
Best wishes to all
