I seem to remember reading in it that (Catholic) French sailors temporarily
buried their dead in the gravel in the holds, in order to return them home
for a decent burial, whilst (Protestant) British sailors chucked them
In terms of hygiene, I know which side I'd prefer to be on. :-)
