italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Katharina,
re. Quattrocento policing, particularly with regard to sexual mores, see
Michael Rocke’s article on the Ufficiali di Notte:
Michael Rocke, ‘Il controllo dell’omosessualità a Firenze nel XV secolo: gli
Ufficiali di Notte’, _Quaderni storici_, 66 (1987), 701-23.
A more detailed account can be found in his volume _Forbidden Friendships:
Homosexuality and Male Culture in Renaissance Florence_ (Oxford and New
York: Oxford University Press, 1996) – esp. chapters 2 and 6.
Richard Trexler refers to the Ufficiali di Notte and the Ufficiali
dell'Onestà in _Public Life in Renaissance Florence_
Re. the Cinquecento -
Rocke also mentions, in his epilogue, the role of policing in C.16 – for a
more comprehensive discussion of the Cinquecento ‘police force’, you might
want to consult John Brackett’s _Criminal Justice and Crime in Late
Renaissance Florence, 1537-1609_ (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,
1992).
The Archivio dello Stato in Florence contains some interesting, and
intriguing, reports in its 'fondi' for the C.16 Otto di Guardia – see the
Protocollo di Deliberazioni e Partiti, the Giornale delle faccende
quotidiane, and the particularly revealing Suppliche.
Good luck,
Domenico Zanrè
