I agree that the whole issue of how we record relationships needs to be
widely discussed. If HBSMR is used to record hierarchical relationships (and
it doesn't have to be), both in the tree and in the relationships table,
then we have to make sure we use it consistently. It would be helpful if we
could have a general discussion at the Shrewsbury meeting, but it may then
be better to have a small sub-group to discuss the issue in detail and
report back (as we did with GIS). This is of course not an issue that is
exclusive to HBSMR users, so it should really be discussed at the SMR Users
Group as well.

Subject: Hierarchical Relationships
Having set this particular hare coursing its way through the system and
noting that it now appears to have exhausted itself, perhaps I had better
put together a few observations (not that they have to be the final word if
anyone else has anything to say).
I can't see any great overall need for relationships other than what seems
to be agreed to be geographical parent-child i.e an abbey and its
constituent parts or a graveyard and the chest tombs within it, and a
peer-peer relationship for related sites in the same area but of a different
date - my Saxon settlement and medieval town of Wolverhampton (to my mind
unrelated sites in the same area do not need a relationship creating). I
had created a geographical peer-peer for this as I had assumed that
chronological peer-peer meant two related sites of the same period. It
appears, however, that Victoria and Nick would record my two settlements as
Chronological Peer-Peer. This is of course the problem. If no one has
written down a definition for these terms interpretations will differ.
This lack of standardisation is what we have been trying to overcome since
SMRs were first set up. Hence I would suggest that we might discuss this
issue at the next HBSMR User Meeting (it would be helpful if someone could
perhaps draft some basic definitions for the discussion - could Crispin
adapt his?)
