Dear Colleagues,
Long gone - happily - are the days, decades ago, when German language
literature was not unfairly being looked upon as gloomy, complicated, stiff
and introspective. I am pleased to announce the publication of the eleventh
issue of new books in german which confirms the transformation and
presents an exciting range of nineteen fiction, non-fiction, adolescent and
children's titles, including five debuts. Check out our website www.new-books-
in-german.com and feel free to send us any comments, suggestions or
queries ([log in to unmask]).
As its title indicates, new books in german reviews titles launched either at
the same time as, or shortly before, the issue in question. More than half of
the submissions we receive from publishers reach us as proofs, and in
consequence it is in this magazine that you can expect to read the first
review of many books, and certainly the first in English. But new also means
that we review new authors, and this time we welcome Heike Geissler,
Rainer Merkel, Sven Regener, Christof Hamann and André Kubiczek, all
young writers of promise. Further, we publish articles: Ruediger Goerner
writes on Friederike Mayroecker, Malcolm Pender on Swiss Literature, Erica
Benz-Steffen on Pro Helvetia, Peter Hutchinson on Stefan Heym and Jo
Catling on Max Sebald.
I hope you will find something that suits your interest!
Astrid Kurth
