According to the Commentary on 'A Shropshire Lad', poem XXXI, in
Archie Burnett's Oxford English Texts edition of 'The Poems of A E
Housman' - please note, there's no 'e' in his name - Viriconium (modern
Wroxeter) was the fourth largest town in Roman Britain, with its
legionary fortress and civilian settlement occupying some 170 acres.
Uriconium was an accepted alternative spelling when Housman wrote the
poem.
As a member of the Housman Society too, I'm always happy to comment on
his works here :-)
