Thank you Nikki Adams, Rachel King and Nicola Snowdon - you have been most helpful. The neurology section of the Swedish physiotherapist association is planning to give a seminar on conversion disorder in the autumn and I am trying to be prepared! I have had a few of these patients over the years and it seems the earlier they can be diagnosed the better. I stumbled across a paper about just that, in case any of you are interested.
Maruff P, Velakoulis D: The voluntary control of motor imagery. Imagined movements in individuals with feigned motor impairmant and conversion disorder. Neuropsychologia 38 (2000) 1251-1260.
