medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. March) is the feast day of:
Jonas and Barachisius (d. 327) Jonas and Barachisius were brothers. An
eyewitness report tells that the two were martyrs in Persia, brutally
tortured and then beheaded during a period of Christian persecution in
Persia.
Armogestes, Archinimus, and Saturus (d. after 460) Armogestes was a
Catholic Christian, a high official of the Vandal king Genseric. When
Genseric decided on persecution of the Catholics, he was stripped of his
honors but not killed, so the Romans wouldn't honor him as a
martyr---instead, he was sent to be a cowherd. He died soon after.
Archinimus and Saturus were caught in the same persecution.
Bertold of Calabria (d. c. 1195) Bertold, probably born in the
neighborhood of Limoges at the beginning of the twelfth century, became a
hermit at Mt. Carmel in the mid-twelfth century. From c. 1185 he was
superior of a community of hermits that after his death developed into the
Carmelite order.
Ludolf of Ratzeburg (d. 1250) Ludolf was a Praemonstratensian, who in 1236
became bishop of Ratzeburg (Schleswig-Holstein). He opposed Duke Albert of
Saxony's attempts to appropriate Church goods, upon which the ruler
dungeoned and maltreated the saint. Ludolf died of injuries shortly after
he was released from prison, and is on that account regarded as a martyr.
His cult was approved in 1728.
