medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. March) is the feast day of:
Nicodemus (d. 1st cent.) The evangelist John reports that the Pharisee
Nicodemus, member of the Jerusalem high council, was a secret follower of
Jesus. After the crucifixion, Nicodemus came openly and, along with Joseph
of Arimathea, tended to the burial of Jesus' body. Nothing is known of his
life after this time, except that he is supposed to have suffered
persecution. He is sometimes regarded as a martyr.
John of Lycopolis (d. 394/395) John was born in c. 305 in Lycopolis
(Assiut, Egypt). He was a carpenter, but at about the age of 25 became a
hermit, living in a cave in a nearby mountain for the next 40 years. His
hermitage attracted so many pilgrims that John had to build a house for
them. John was a famed miracle worker, and also credited with prophetic
powers. Even Emperor Theodosius visited him, and Jerome and Augustine both
venerated and consulted him.
Rupert of Salzburg (d. c. 718/720) Rupert is accounted the founder of
Salzburg. He was probably born in Worms, where he probably was already
consecrated as a diocesan or auxiliary bishop. In c. 700 Rupert came to
Bavaria, probably invited by Duke Theodo II, to establish an independent
bishopric. On the ruins of the Roman city of Juvavum Rupert erected the
monastery of St. Peter and a convent on the Nonnberg (making his niece
Erentrudis abbess). Rupert and his monks (he and his successors were
abbots of St. Peter's as well as bishops) conducted a successful mission
campaign that apparently extended far beyond the borders of the new diocese
