medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
And, of course, GUDMUND THE GOOD ARASON of Iceland,
whose cult never actually managed formal roman approval,
but who is by far the best remembered of the three
icelandic saint bishops, among other things having
his name associated with an incredible number of
wells and springs, some of which he may indeed have blessed;
also for successful encounters with a variety of trolls;
and finally (though only in later folklore) for remarkable
open-mindedness regarding the said trolls.
once he was blessing a peninsula to get rid of the
evil beings that lived there, starting inland and working
his way towards the point. he had almost completed the job,
so that only a small bit of land, far out in the sea,
was unblessed, when a voice was heard from the cliff:
"stop blessing, Gudmund the good. Even the evil have
to be somewhere!" Gudmund apparently found this reasonable,
and didnt bless the remaining bit of peninsula.
