Earth and Fire: contributions to the study of Italian terracotta sculpture
A major international conference
Saturday 13 April 2002
10.30 - 17.00
Lecture Theatre
The exhibition, Earth and Fire, examines the full range of Italian
terracotta sculpture between 1400 and 1800, including works by Ghiberti,
Donatello, Bernini and Canova. Finished works will be juxtaposed with
terracotta models, and linked with related drawings and paintings. The
themes of the exhibition will be explored in depth by a distinguished panel
of international scholars and conservators who will present the results of
recent research. Their work complements and explores the themes of the
exhibition and the accompanying book.
Topics to be considered include:
- the changing use of the bozzetto or model from the 15th to the 18th centuries
- changes in sculptors’ workshop practice
- what conservation can tell us about sculptors’ working methods
- the materials and techniques of terracotta sculpture
The programme of lectures and case studies is aimed at art historians, art
history students, curators, conservators, and others with a broad interest
in the history of terracottas and Italian sculpture.
