Troynovaunt was the city founded by Brutus, legendary descendant of Aeneas and eponymous founder of the British race (Geoffrey of Monmouth, Historia Regum Britanniae = History of the Kings of England, Latin chronicle, c. 1135). Edmund Spenser applied the name to London (in The Faerie Queene, English epic poem, 1590-1596). And the Middle English poet Layamon (fl. 1200) wrote a poem called "Brut"; Nennius and Wace have also told his story -- which appears to be legend rather than having any factual basis.
