italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Re. Renaissance Ekphrasis
Dear Iain,
Poliziano’s _Stanze_ come to mind immediately – see the description of the
doors of Vulcan (Book I, 97-118).
There are many precedents, including:
Homer, _Iliad_, XVIII - the shield of Achilles.
Virgi, _Aeneid_, VIII - the shield of Aeneas.
Dante, _Purgatorio_, XII - the circle of the Proud.
For further info. re. Poliziano, see:
Ronnie Terpening, ‘Poliziano’s Treatment of a Classical Topos: Ekphrasis,
Portal to the Stanze’, _Italian Quarterly_, 17 (1973-74), 39-71.
