Several people have talked about an "identity dance" or a "gentle movement" in identity to get to where they are now. Personally, as someone with several health impairments dating from childhood and adolescence, I have experienced a dance that was sometimes gentle, sometimes violent, but for the most part took over a decade. I realize that I'm still dancing, but I think when it comes to my current illnesses, most of the hard identity work has been finished.
As a health psychology student, I think that one of the problems with health psychology is that it typically defines "long-term outcomes" as being 1 to 5 years post-onset. To me, that's why health psych. still deals with "loss" and "adjustment" and not life and living.
Does either time-frame mesh with your time-frame? Why do you think yours took as long or as short as it did? For me, college was a turning point; I didn't have to deal with my parents' conceptions of my health status, and the ADA became law in America.
