Hello Steve
there is a good article (consensus report) by Stanton-Hicks et al looking
at an orderly approach to the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome -
the preferred name for reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
it is in the clinical journal of pain vol14, No 2, 1998. Complex Regional
Pain Syndrome: guidelines for therapy.
the central theme is functional restoration (isn't everything!) ,a
co-ordinated but progressive approach that introduces the treatment
modalities needed to achieve both remission and rehabilitation. Specific
exercise therapy is critical to this Fx restoration. it discusses all aspect
of treatment for CRPS - analgesia, neuromodulation, behavioural mgt plus the
special needs in treating children.
it is worth a read particularly if you are not familiar with the treatment -
I have found you cannot treat them in isolation and some can be quite
difficult. also the treatment has changed considerably since the old reflex
sym dystrophy days!
Cheers,
Anna.
