medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A bit more about this saint. Born near Penally in Pembrokeshire, son of a
local royal family, trained under St Dyfrig, founded the monastery of
Llandeilo Fawr (Great St Teilo's) near Carmarthen, fled with his followers
to Brittany when yellow fever broke out in Wales, but eventually returned.
According to tradition he finally settled at Llandaff near Cardiff, where
he died in 566 AD and where his relics were said to rest. (Though the story
of the division of his relics is explained by the number of churches
claiming to be the headquarters of his cult - and thus the proprietors of
the extensive estate given to 'Teilo's church').
There are versions of the vita in the Book of Llan Daf, a collection of
texts compiled to substantiate the claims of the diocese of Llandaff to the
relics and the territory in the eleventh century, and in Cotton Vespasian
XIV. The Book of Llan Daf version is edited with a substantial introduction
by G H Doble and D Simon Evans in Lives of the Welsh Saints (UWP 1971) and
the Cotton Vespasian version by A W Wade-Evans in Vitae Sanctorum
Britanniae et Genealogiae (UWP 1944).
