medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Surely the relic is in the altar stone traditionally embedded in a dip in the stone the altar, but in new altars often under the altar surface wood/stone so as to be even in these days of communion under both kinds and fuller [or even multiple (tut tut)] chalices/jugs

Oh yes, and I do know that there is a room in the Vatican somewhere in the
Office of the Prefecture of Saints (or whatever the title is), that
allegedly houses thousands of saints' relics, and when a new Catholic church
opens, the priest in charge sends them a relic because every Catholic Church
is supposed to have a relic. I asked my parish priest what the relic was in
our church, and he had no idea. I was terribly disappointed.

I will leave the first question to others. Regarding the second, this would
be an impossible task. My parish (in Chicago) alone has more than 1000
relics. I do believe studies have been done cataloguing relics of the True
Cross, but I cannot cite the references.

Firstly - I'm not a specialist in this field (but with an archaeological
training) so apologies if my question seems completely naive...
My queries are as follows:
* Can anyone provide me with references - academic papers through to more
synthetic texts - for studies on relics of the Saints (historical,
archaeological, ethnographic, socialogical, whatever....)?
* Tell me whether there has been any (successful?) attempt to catalogue
relics - either for particular countires or on a pan-European basis and/or
for particular categories of relic or for particular saints?
For the record the query is one of personal interest prompted by recent
travels in Italy and Spain.
Many thanks
Alex
