medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Nancy,
Have you tried the GALLIA CHRISTIANA ?
This is a MASSIVE ( c.20 vol. ) 18th century compilation of the
ecclesiastical institutions extant and defunct in Gaul (= French-speaking
Europe) at the time it was compiled. It lists all monasteries and cathedrals
and is pretty comprehensive on parishes as well. It lists the abbots and
bishops by name (where known) illustrated with useful snippets from original
documents. Its advantage is that it is pre-Revolution. It is divided by
diocese and it also has pull-out diocesan maps at the beginning of each
section.
Two warnings. The whole work - including the place names on the map - are in
LATIN.
and The volumes themselves are heavy enough to give you a heart attack
lifting them.
I can't find the correct bibliographical citation - someone else on the list
(Tom ?) ought to be able to provide this. I do not know how wide-spread this
work will be in the States. Copes are to be found in the more venerable
British institutions incl. the B.L. itself Given the size and date I doubt
if you can get it on interlibrary loan or a photocopy. I don't THINK Krauss
did a reprint ....
