medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (25. February) is the feast day of:
Walburga of Heidenheim (d. 779) Walburga was born in c. 710 in England to
a family of saints (both parents, an uncle, and two brothers are saints).
At the wish of her uncle Boniface, Walburga came to Germany in 750 where
she joined the convent of Tauberbischofsheim, then the double monastery of
Heidenheim, which she led from 761 until her death. A very popular saint,
numerous churches are dedicated to Walburga in Europe and America, and oil
from her shrine in Eichstatt is sent to places throughout the world.
Walpurgisnacht (30. April-1. May) has nothing to do with her, except the
coincidence that 1. May is the feast of Walburga's translatio.
Tarasios of Constantinople (d. 806) Tarasios became patriarch of
Constantinople. He was one of the greatest defenders of holy images in the
iconoclast controversy.
Constantius of Fabriano (d. 1481) (blessed) Constantius was born in
Fabriano (Italy) in 1410. He held a series of high offices in the Order of
Preachers, and dedicated himself to the reform of the order. He was
beatified in 1821.
Marcus de Marconibus (d. 1510) (blessed) Marcus was born in 1480 in
Mantua (Italy), and entered the Hieronymite order in 1496. Credited with
the gifts of wise counsel and miracles, he won great veneration. He was
beatified in 1906.
