medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
One ought to survey the reviews of LeGoff's book; Richard Southern and others expressed serious reservations. I think in general the book has had at best "very mixed" reviews, as we say euphemistically.

Addendum here- Le Goff's book has been translated into English by Arthur
Goldhammer --Birth of Purgatory, published by Chicago 1984. I admit to being
fascinated by the topic although lamentably *not* an expert. sharon
