Dear colleagues
I mentioned the small matter raised by Pohoryles in connection with
the ESA conference only because I was astonished that he would
here use the words "minor incident", which I would have used in
some other connection.
But I very much disagree with his point that it would be cynical to
protest the destruction of the statistical office instead of killings. As
citizens we have our opininons about the killings in both sides but as
sociologists I believe the question of the destruction of statistics is
relevant for us. This is brought out very clearly in what Ray Thomas
wrote about the situation in "Palestine territories".
I very much resent the tactic of Pohoryles to attempt to change the
basis of discussion and make suggestions which have nothing to do
with the original point raised by Benoit. This is what often happens in
e-mail discussions and should be averted here.
Sincerely
J P Roos
