nick, ingrid you are right
Indeed some members of the Exegesis mapping sub group infact do not
use the mapping link any more... and have done exactly what you have
suggested ... created seperate tabs etc that they use inside the GIS.
With the amount of data we are using in the NT (by the sounds of it we
are not alone in this) we just cannot do that. We need full functionality of
an integrated GIS based database- at present ExeGesIS the closest to it.
I fear the situation will only get worse as we are increasingly all looking
at multiple layers on our GIS ...
Historic Landscape characterisation
EH data (surveys, NMR etc)
OS map Data - imagine how cluttered it will be with TOIDS!!!
NT Data - that is on the way - and is likely to include measured surveys ..
NTSMR data as well
Ownership boundaries
Status boundaries
SMR Point or polygon data that probably should be linked to our SMR's
Thematic mapping (something we are begining to consider how we might
use this)
the list goes on and on
now our workspaces are going to get very cluttered and also it is likely
we will want some of that data to be attached to other databases or
systems --- which may complicate matters greatly.
Again if i remember rightly we did think about the issue of Layers and
how we might need to attach to other systems in our organisations or
counties.
I think the needs in terms of data are begining to mushroom and we need
to consider scope very carefully.
Is this something the national SMR group should talk about ...???
it is a SMR content issue .. traditionally we have considered the "SMR" as
the text database but that i think is begining to change ... certainly in the
Trust the SMR is now taken as being:
the "SMR" is
Digital Mapping
The Archive (maps, plans, photos, reports, documents etc)
The database
Our forward plans for the next 5 years are heading us toward an
integration of the elements and indeed much of our archive is being
digitised as I write this e-mail.
I think if we are clear on what we want, what the content we may wish
to have as core elements of our data then this will help developers
deliver the systems that fulfill our requirements.

Hi Tony
I have some sympathy with what Ingrid appears to be saying. Using the
mapping module for visual searching is confusing sometimes, especially
if you have numerous different events and monuments in a small area.
Colouring them differently helps, but is not the full answer, as inevitably
some things are masked by others. Also, the advantage of having
different layers would be that if all you wanted to look at was Listed
Buildings, or Find spots, you could.
I suppose one answer might to be create your own subsets of the mon
& Event etc tab as different tabs using queries to select all the findspots,
for example, so you could have this functionality, but the disadvantage of
that would be losing the live link to the text database.
