We are currently working on the evaluation phase of the EASEL project which uses
IMS MD, LOM and DCEd.
( I did not attend Loughborough meeting and I only hope that my comments are
relevant)
1) In relation with Lorna's sensible suggestion to expand the options
novice/expert. It occurs to me that 'prior experience in producing learning
material metadata' using some other metadata standards could be also relevant.
Whoever has this experience would find IMS easier to use not to
mention that IMS is, for instance, only an application profile of IEEE LOM.
More importantly this kind of person would also be potential source of useful
information on the reason why one would choose IMS MD and not build own
application of IEEE LOM or DCEd.
It might look that addition in the novice/expert users question would overlap with
the question - but the point is essentially different.
2) 'Are you using any other metadata schemes, if so which'
- it looks like that here mentioned question would need some clarification whether
'metadata schemes' asked should not be 'learning material metadata schemes' only.
It is big difference in a profile of person who is using museum, library, archive
or other metadata schemes and those being involved with educational material only.
Having said that any experience in metadata could be also very relevant although
in a different way (better understanding of resource discovery requirements,
indexing policy, granularity, access points, character coding issues, information
exchange, vocabulary control etc.)
So suggestion would be
1) Are you using of have used any other metadata schema besides IMS MD?
a) yes, another educational metadata schema
Which one(s)? ____________________________
b) yes, another non-educational metadata schema
Which one(s)? ____________________________
c) no
3) Athough the following could be a part of some other survey - it would be
extremely usefull to harvest information on
- IMS metadata management issues (did on use a databases to populate IMS metadata,
what kind of database, how did they process data).
- size of the collection described
- search programes, techniques, interrogation sw using IMS MD
- planned or undertaken evaluation on metadata information retrieval performance
