I'm currently chairing a review of our audio visual services, specifically
the provision of videos, DVDs, compact discs and cassettes. We've looked at
a number of issues so far, including the long-term prospects of the cassette
format, and the validity of maintaining comprehensive collections of stock
when a narrower, populist range of material would seem to have far greater
appeal to our customers. Other issues we're considering are the introduction
of Playstation games for loan in some of our libraries and purchasing
through standing order multiple copies per site of the latest chart CDs and
'blockbuster' videos.
Has anyone else been involved in such a major review of their authority's
A/V service - i.e., examining their service's existing strengths and
weaknesses and determining in what ways it could best be developed? Or
tackled the dilemma between the provision of 'balanced' A/V collections
and, let's say, more mainstream ones?
All comments and suggestions will be gratefully received.
With thanks in advance,
Noel Kavanagh
