More projects funded from the Inequalities in Health Fund
Health and Social Services Minister Jane Hutt will today (21st January) visit a coronary heart disease prevention
project at Lansdowne Hospital, Cardiff. The Minister will take the opportunity to announce that an additional 13
projects are to be funded from the Inequalities in Health Fund to strengthen efforts to tackle the high incidence of
coronary heart disease (CHD) in Wales.
The new projects address health inequalities in some of Wales' most deprived communities where rates of disease
are highest. They include:
a community based rehabilitation programme in Powys for people with CHD;
an 'exercise on prescription' scheme in Caerphilly;
a mobile screening service to identify 'at risk' people who do not normally visit their doctor in Bridgend;
a lifestyle modification programme in Bridgend;
healthy eating community classes in Wrexham;
help for employers to improve the health of their employees in Merthyr Tydfil.
The Inequalities in Health Fund was established by the Welsh Assembly Government to stimulate and support new
local action to address inequalities in health and the factors that contribute to it. £14 million has been made available
over 3 years to fight coronary heart disease in Wales. Details of the first 54 projects to receive funding were
announced in July 2001.
Jane Hutt said: "I am delighted to be able to announce funding for the new projects. It shows yet again the Welsh
Assembly Government's commitment to reducing the levels of coronary heart disease in some of our most
disadvantaged communities.
"Along with the wide range of projects already being funded, the new projects will improve access to services, offer
practical help for people at risk, and provide rehabilitation and support for people who already suffer from coronary
heart disease.
"The enthusiasm and commitment of all health professionals involved is exemplified by the team at Lansdowne
Hospital. This inspires confidence that these projects will make a real difference to the health and well-being of
people in Wales."
