Actually when Ray McGlone and me were SR's in the old Yorkshire region. There
were only 4 SR's per region we overlapped at Hull. At the time there were 9
SHO's and we could only appoint 5. On the first day we had an induction day.
When 2 of the SHO's arrived and saw that there was only going to be 5 as
opposed to 9 of them they walked out and we were left with 3 SHO's to run the
service for the next 6 months. If you want to hear the continuing saga I'm
sure Ray or me could fill in the details.
One of the Doctors who walked out is a big shot in the profession, won't say
any more. I think those days are about to be revisited. It is not the SHO
where the real problem will lie but the Staff grade. Ours are deserting to go
into GP land where the stress is less and the money more.
I have just written to the Director of Human Resources and the Medical Director
requesting 3 Discretionary Points for ours. Can see them leaving in droves. I
think if departments do not have sufficient staff they should go into respite.
Ray and me kept the service going but in hindsight it was a wrong decision.
