Does popular science = pseudoscience?
Rita Carter
In a world where the public is inundated with demands on its time, how can
popular science avoid oversimplification and attention-grabbing speculation?
We start to pay attention to an area of science only when it impinges on our
lives as with MMR, BSE and stem cell cloning. Then we want to know all
about it – and the media struggle to produce instant crash courses. How can
science be presented in a digestible, interesting form, without reducing it
to pseudo-science and scare mongering? Tonight's guest, to discuss the
challenge of communicating science, is Rita Carter, award-winning medical
and science journalist (the New Scientist, the Independent and other
mainstream papers), and author of the best-selling Mapping the Mind and,
most recently, Consciousness. In the chair is Daniel Glaser, ICA
scientist-in-residence.
