I very much suspect that the Yahoo sourced message was something
forwarded to this list, or sent through a Yahoo group list.
There is sweet fanny adams that anyone can do to eliminate this garbage.
It goes with using free email. You have to put up with it.
Then again, some email-list software can enforce "no attachment" or
ASCII only. Do that to some of these messages and you end up with
unreadable garbage, especially of you GO DIGest.
Yahoo's ads, Hotmail's porn and AOL's non standard email are a pain and
much excoriated in e-land.

And a happy weekend to everyone. Some of us will be working.

Chris, that is rubbish and unhelpful.
A large number of messages across JANET carry commercial 'tags' because
of
where they originate. Can you cite one instance where the JANET
regulators
have taken action against a Yahoo message that carries a commercial tag?
If
they did (and they haven't) it would be a bit like taking your email as
an
official policy statement from the University of Wolverhampton Wolfson
School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. I trust you asked
your
head of school, Steve Rothberg, before your posted your email in case it
is
taken as an official school comment?
Let Ian get on with the valuable contributions he makes to UK science
communication. And turn off your HTML in email. Then you won't see
advertisements. I didn't see it. Did I miss anything?

Subject: Adverts on psci.com
In a recent post to this list from Ian Simmons an advertisement appeared
from a Yahoo Groups sponsor. The product advertised was a certain 'Tiny
Wireless Video Camera'. The advert's imperative 'See What You've Been
Missing' appeared alongside an image of a young woman apparently in the
latter stages of undressing.
Even if such an advert does not offend psci.com subscribers, it does
breach
the JANET Acceptable Use Policy as 'unsolicited commercial or
advertising
material' (http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/policy.htm).
