The GROUPSIM Network and the UK Operational Research Society's
Simulation
Study Group launch a survey on Group Working in Modelling-Related
Projects
and a portal for the collaborative simulation modelling community.
The GROUPSIM Network (www.groupsim.com) is hosted by the Department of
Information Systems and Computing at Brunel University and is an
international community of academics, industrialists, and vendors who
are
interested in the emerging field of Collaborative Simulation Modelling
(CSM). CSM is a term used to refer collectively to new social
processes,
tools and infrastructure in modelling and simulation offered by new
technology support of human-to-human and computer-to-computer
collaboration. The focus is primarily on process-based simulation
modelling practiced in business, manufacturing, and service industries
as
well as some areas of defence. Our secondary focus is on all forms of
OR-related modelling From a new technology viewpoint, we are
interested in
practical applications of distributed systems technology such as
· CSCW/groupware (the use of distributed systems technology to allow
people
to collaborate more effectively),
· distributed simulation (the use of distributed systems technology to
facilitate interaction or interoperation between model execution and
model
development),
· parallel simulation (the use of many computers to speed up the
execution
of a model or experiment)
· web-based simulation (the use of the world wide web to innovate in
modelling and simulation practice).
The main mission of the GROUPSIM Network is therefore to create the
foundation for the proliferation of integrated collaborative simulation
modelling techniques, tools and infrastructure in the larger academic
and
industrial communities by promoting a discursive forum to promote
skills
transfer between researchers, vendors, and end users. The two main
guiding
lights of this work are evolution not revolution and dissemination by
demonstration. Apart from organising workshops and conferences in the
area
(see our website www.groupsim.com), the GROUPSIM Network supports
research
in the area by surveying industry on various practices. Our current
survey
is attempting to provide a baseline on the types of collaborative
activity
that takes place during an OR modelling-related project. Ultimately our
aim
is to increase the cost effectiveness of modelling projects through
novel
working practices and useful technology. Specifically, the main
objectives
of this survey are:
·To determine the extent and type of meeting across a range of
modelling-related projects,
· To identify the level of use of technology in meetings during
modelling-related projects.
To identify opportunities to increase the cost effectiveness of a
modelling-related project through innovations in working practices and
technology.
The question sections are:
1. General Project Details
2. Scheduled Meeting Details
3. Unscheduled/Impromptu Meeting Details
4. Item Use During Meetings
5. Indirect Collaboration Details
The questionnaire is online and can be found at the GROUPSIM website
www.groupsim.com.
The analysis of the results of this survey will be available from the
UK
Operational Research Society's web pages and notification of this
will be
given in the OR Newsletter. All responses will be treated in the
Strictest
Confidence and will only be used for research purposes anonymously. The
questionnaire should take around 20 minutes to complete. If you would
like
to take part in the survey, please fill in the online form by July 31st
2002. There is also the opportunity to take part in a groupware
demonstration. If you wish to participate in this, please indicate
this
fact in the appropriate place on the form.
If you are interested in this work, or wish to join the mailing list,
then
contact the co-ordinator of the GROUPSIM Network (Dr Simon J E Taylor)
through the web site or by email ([log in to unmask]). The
GROUPSIM
Network is partially supported by EPSRC grant GR/N35304.
Best wishes,
Simon Taylor and Stewart Robinson.
