Apologies for cross-posting
Postdoctoral Fellowship in State-to-State Reaction Dynamics
A postdoctoral position is available in the research groups of Professor Ian WM
Smith (http://www.chem.bham.ac.uk/staff/smith.htm ) and Dr Ian R Sims
(http://www.chem.bham.ac.uk/staff/sims.htm ) at The University of Birmingham to
work on an EPSRC-funded project entitled 'The Formation and Reactions of
Hydrogen in Specific Rovibrational States'. The successful candidate will use
pulsed lasers to prepare and/or probe specific rovibrational states of hydrogen
in elementary gas-phase reactions.
All the main equipment is now in place, and preliminary experiments are
underway. At present there is only a year's further post-doc funding available.
Clearly some experience with pulsed lasers will be an important asset for any
person applying for this post.
Any potential candidate expressing interest might wish to look at the following
three papers. The present project represents an extension of work described in
these publications.
G. Hawthorne, P. Sharkey and I.W.M. Smith, Rate Coefficients for the Reaction of
H Atoms with H2O|04>- and for the Self-Relaxation of H2O|04>-, J. Chem. Phys.,
108, 4693-4696 (1998).
P.W. Barnes, P. Sharkey, I.R. Sims and I.W.M. Smith, Rate Coefficients for the
Reaction and Relaxation of H2O in Specific Vibrational States with H Atoms and
H2O, Faraday Discuss. Chem. Soc., 113, 167180 (1999).

Branching Ratio between Reaction and Relaxation in the Removal of H2O from its
|04> Vibrational State in Collisions with H Atoms, J. Chem. Phys., 115, 45864592
(2001).
I append the 'official advertisement' approved by our personnel office at the
foot of this email. However, I would encourage any interested candidate to
contact us informally by email or fax, sending a CV and (preferably) email
addresses of 3 referees as soon as possible.
Best wishes,
