I didn't see the original question, but a hydrocarbon mineral called montan
wax was used for such manufacture for some period of time. It is associated
with low grade coals and was, I believe only commercially produced in two
localities: in the Czech republic and in California. It was also used in
manufacture of carbon paper and shoe polish. Might this have been found in
Shropshire?
