You will see that the date is very close to Whitsuntide. Most unions,
friendly societies, chapels and other working-class institutions
organised walks and demonstrations over Whitsuntide. These were the
originals of Wakes Weeks and would have occurred by the thousand all
over the North. The tradition carried on in such events as the Durham
Miners gala until very recently.
Short of any specific contradiction, I should work on the basis that it
was an annual event and marked a holiday.
